Joey Vela

I am a recent graduate of NC State, where I studied Political Science and Interdisciplinary Studies with a self-designed concentration in Sustainable City Planning. My experiences in and out of the classroom have led me to develop a passion for equal public service provisions and public policy alternatives that work for all.

I care about creating systems that work for everyone, especially communities that have historically been excluded from decision-making. This commitment drives my work at the Location Matters Lab, where I serve as a Policy Analyst within the Community Engagement Core (CEC) of the North Carolina Center for Coastal Algae, People, and the Environment (NC C-CAPE).

In this role, I help connect the dots between environmental regulation, watershed health, and the lived experiences of people impacted by harmful algal blooms (HABs). I draft policy briefs, track the history and evolution of state and federal legislation, and contribute to GIS-based analyses that illuminate patterns of environmental harm and regulatory inaction. My work emphasizes data justice, transparency, and the importance of community perspectives in policy discussions.
